Complete Hearth + Surround: 16 AETCO Antique Embossed 6" & 124 Fireplace Tiles

Description

Lot of 16 American Encaustic Tile Company (A. E. T. CO.) embossed 6 x 6 tiles suitable for a fireplace surround + 124 fireplace tiles suitable for a fireplace hearth.
Depending on your dimensions, these tiles may be enough for a surround plus a hearth. Many other uses are also possible.
The 16
embossed tiles
for a fireplace surround are approximately
6" x 6" x 1/2" thick. There is f
ine crazing in the color layer of glaze that only rarely extends through the top clear layer. Most have some mortar on the back.
According to an AETCO catalog from around 1895 (pictured here, and available online) these embossed tiles are in the
ceramic
style of Bernard
Palissy
(1510 - 1590)
. Four of the 16 tiles are rendered in
shades of
light green plus other colors. One of the four had a break repaired sometime in the past. The remaining 12 tiles are in
shades of
l
ight green.
Regarding the tiles for the fireplace hearth, there are enough for a hearth measuring approximately 48" x 18". Other configurations are also possible. The 79 full tiles are approximately 6" long x 1 1/2" wide x 1/2" thick. Five of the full tiles each have one break. The 45 half-size tiles are approximately 3" long. Probably 120+ years old from around 1890 to 1900, but date is not certain. The tile maker for these hearth tiles is unknown. The tiles have a raised symbol consisting of a star, two scimitars and a pierced crescent moon (see photo).

The tile colors are difficult to describe.
These tiles are mainly in shades of green plus cream or white, sometimes with a very pale bluish tint.
Also areas of pale pink or lilac. Almost all of these
tiles have paint which will need to be removed.

Tiles still have some mortar or grout attached.
Tiles will have wear, paint, chips (especially
on corners)
, pits, dirt, soot, mortar, and other damage and imperfections.
These antique tiles probably contain lead.
Lead is harmful to humans, especially young children. Lead dust is a common source of lead poisoning, and can be created by cutting or demolition of tiles that have lead. According to information from the internet most, if not all, antique tile glazes contain lead. Some tiles made e
ven today
in the USA and other countries contain lead. Depending on your design, the need to cut tiles may be reduced or eliminated because this set has 45 half-size tiles included. Also, some of these tiles are painted, and it is possible the paint may have lead.
Tiles will be carefully wrapped in bubble-wrap and double boxed for FedEx shipment.
