Availability: 100 in stock
  • Brand: Laurel of California
  • Condition: We have tried to be meticulous with potential flaws - with the exception of two minor chips one on rim of plate, one on underside of rim of plate, and the clear chip on the salt shaker rim, the rest include typical finds with this type of mid-century pottery - glaze skips, glaze thinning, kiln flaws, etc. Overall, this is a rare and great set. I've seen any flaws of this type easily restored if so desired - look great as is.

    Description

Rare set of 9 XL divided dinner plates (13 3/4" in diameter) by Laurel of California. This was paired as a set of 8 along with 8 matching speckled canary yellow matte glazed mugs purchased from the estate of a mid-century modern pottery collector.  The set also includes sugar, salt and pepper dispensers.  We have not seen this style or large of plate from Laurel of California.  The pieces are from the Cerama-stone stoneware line.  The plates and mugs are all marked on the bottom.  The original stoppers accompany the dispensers. We err on the very conservative side when listing flaws.  For the mid-century modern pottery collector many of these "flaws" are common and typical of these mid-century pottery lines.  Most flaws include kiln flaws, glaze skips, glaze chips, glaze thinning, etc. (direct result of pottery rubbing up against something during the firing processes). Below you will see a detailed breakdown of these mostly minor flaws.
    Clear flaws:
2 plates have very minor chips at rim or underside of rim (photoed)
Salt dispenser has clear chip on rim (photoed).
    Minor flaws (occurred during manufacturing):
We have counted 6 minor glaze skips, 6 minor kiln flaws, 1 larger kiln flaw (examples of the glaze skips are photoed and the larger kiln flaw is photoed - larger kiln flaw is not a chip in the stoneware, just absence/chip in glaze)
3 of the mugs have some minor glaze thinning - hard to see, but appear as if a slight smudge (hard to see, but photoed)
The sugar has area of darker glaze - again, likely occurred during manufacturing (difficult to see, but photoed).
Overall, this set is in fantastic condition relative to similar pieces from this period.  The rarity of the XL plates (perhaps designed for steak or other large entrees) is the find with this group.  The 52 lb. package will ship in a double sided cardboard dish barrel box measuring 28" x 18" x 18".
