Vintage 1984 Paul Simon for U.S. Senate from Illinois, featuring the bow tie symbol for which Simon was well known in Congress, the Senate, and a brief run for president. The small red bow tie dots the "i" in Simon.
Simon was a voice of reform in the Illinois state Legislature in the 1950s and 1960s, but lost the Democratic primary for governor in 1972. He won a seat in Congress from southern Illinois in 1974 and in 1984, challenged incumbent Republican Sen. Charles Percy, who initially won the post by besting the legendary Democratic Sen. Paul Douglas in 1966. Percy, a popular lawmaker who was mentioned as a GOP presidential candidate from 1968 to 1988, became chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 1981, and by '84, Simon was claiming Percy had lost touch with Illinois.
Then, four years later, Simon ran for the Democratic nomination for president, gaining some early traction but fading quickly. He was re-elected in 1990, retired in 1996 (giving way to current Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin) and died in 2003.
